Cannabis and Weight Management: The New “Green” Diet

You’d think with all of the Doritos and late night Taco Bell runs, stoners should be leading the way in obesity, right? Wrong! It turns out that people who regularly consume cannabis have lower BMIs and a reduced cannabis and weight managementrisk of obesity than those who choose not to partake. Seems counterintuitive to some, but there is some solid science behind why cannabis helps use manage their weight!

The journal Obesity, published a population-based data study that measured BMI of 786 adults between 18 and 74. The study found that adults who had consumed cannabis in the last 12 months were more likely to have a lower BMI, lower fasting insulin levels, and lower insulin resistance. The American Journal of Medicine also conducted a study of 4657 adults. 46% of those adults had never used marijuana, 12% were current users, and 42% had used marijuana in the past.

According to this study, current marijuana users’ BMIs were 7% lower on average and their waist circumference was 4% smaller on average

Their insulin levels were 16% lower and they exhibited 17% lower insulin resistance. The American Journal of Epidemiology published a survey of over 52,000 people and found that rates of obesity are almost a third lower among the demographic of cannabis users. These variations are far from statistically insignificant, making an OG Kush diet okay after all!

Cannabis and Weight Loss

So, how can something that makes everything taste so good be so good for us? Let’s take a closer look. Insulin seems to be the key factor here, specifically fasting insulin levels. Fasting insulin levels refer to the amount of insulin found in your system prior to eating. In case you aren’t familiar with insulin’s role in the body, insulin is a hormone that is responsible for ensuring our blood sugar levels are regulated and thus, providing the necessary energy for cells to function properly. Having too much insulin, not enough insulin, or building a resistance to insulin are all recipes for disaster in our bodies. Too much insulin can not only cause hypoglycemia but can cause the body to build a resistance to insulin, resulting in Type 2 Diabetes and weight gain. Excessive insulin production and insulin resistance cause the body to store excess sugars as fat and leads to obesity. It is believed that this interplay between insulin regulation and cannabis use is the key to understanding how stoners are more likely to keep their figures despite less than stellar munchie discipline.

Recently, Art Glass, author of The Marijuana Diet, lost 65 pounds that he credits to his marijuana use. In his book, Glass walks users through incorporating cannabis into their weight loss regimen, but also touts the benefits of a plant-based lifestyle and simple exercises which he refers to as “sofa exercises.” Glass, who published his ebook on Amazon, states that “marijuana is a miracle plant and when you smoke with the focused intention to lose weight, and following the four simple guidelines the book lays out, you will get high on life and have thoughts that will really surprise you and delight you.” Of course, Glass’ theory is not without critics. Many say that the cannabis did not play a vital role, but instead, his switch to a healthier diet did the trick. However, many are touting cannabis as the new superfood and suggest that you can gain the same weight-healthy benefits by consuming raw cannabis for all the perks without the high.

Using Cannabis for Weight Management

If you are seriously considering incorporating marijuana into your weight loss journey, you should know about THCV though! THCV is a cannabinoid cannabis and weight management that is said to prevent the munchies and suppress your appetite! So, obviously amping up this powerful cannabinoid in addition to exploiting the other weight maintenance benefits of cannabis could be an awesome way to get the best of all worlds! High THCV strains are hard to find though. The most common strain featuring THCV is Super Silver Haze. This is a “strain that can make users want to get on their feet, it lacks focus but can be very profound and thought provoking. Motivating as it can be, Super Silver Haze shifts gears during the second half of its long lasting high and begins to soothe the body.”

Users claim this is a great strain to enjoy slowly and savor!

Munchies and all, it would appear a lil ganja does the body good! Who knows, maybe the future of weight loss is toking your way to a better body!
